Animal Exclusion & Repairs

Heron’s exclusion procedures include the repairing of any areas of damage or entry points caused by wildlife intrusion. Entry points are any spots on the property that are conducive to allowing any animal, bird or reptile entry into unwanted areas, such as attics. Upon arrival, a Heron Wildlife Solutions technician will perform a full and thorough inspection to look for any potential forced entry points. When the inspection is complete, our technicians will inform the property owner about any major points of concern and the next steps to take in regards to damage repair and prevention of any future wildlife intrusions. If any damage is found on or around the structure, and the property owner agrees with our suggestions, our technicians will proceed to make the necessary repairs. Our repairs also include finishing and painting any areas that have been excluded.

Heron will survey the following areas when performing a wildlife removal inspection:

Ground Level Entry Points

  • GARAGE DOOR SEALS- We will check all seals for signs of gnawing, proper sealing against slab and dry, worn or cracked areas.
  • PIPE ENTRIES – We will inspect for any holes or gnawing
  • SIDING, SKIRTING AND ATTACHED WOOD DECKS – Siding and skirting can be found on many homes. We will focus on areas where knots or holes have been drilled or gnawed open, areas around plumbing, electrical, a/c lines and a/c package units.
  • UTILITY ENTRY POINTS – Utility entry points are areas where the plumbing, water, over head electrical lines and sewer lines may enter or exit the home. These points of interest could be used as entry points for wildlife.
  • TUNNELING AND BURROWING – We will walk around the property to search for tunneling or burrowing. Either is a major sign that an animal has entered the property or is living underneath it. Tunneling creates larger holes than burrowing and is usually created from animals such as armadillos. Burrowing is usually a sign of rodents. If any tunnels are found, we will fill the tunnel with dirt and come back the next day to see if it has reopened. If it has, then the tunnel is live and has wildlife living inside.
  • A/C CHASES OR PACKAGE UNITS – A/C chases and package points are two of the most common entry points for wildlife. We will check these areas for urine smells, missing chunks of insulation around the piping and gnaw marks.
  • BLOCK WALL, CRAWL VENTS / DOORS AND CEDAR SIGIN – We will check for holes in these areas potentially made by rodents.
  • TREES AND SHRUBS AGAINS THE PROPERTY – Overgrown trees and shrubs against the structure allow rodents and wildlife to access the home from the ground. If the shrubs are overgrown, we can trim the shrubs and cut them back to the point of them not touching the structure.

Roof Entry Points

  • BROKEN OR MISSING SOFFITS – We will inspect all soffits to determine the amount of damage or how much, in feet, is missing due to animal destruction.
  • SOFFIT RETURNS – Soffit returns are areas where different roofs will meet, usually forming a sideways V or “>”. Soffit returns are very susceptible to rodent, raccoon, squirrel and opossum entry. Larger animals will usually bow or force the soffit up creating a large hole into the attic and will repeat this in several different areas of the structure. We will check for any damage or sagging soffits. Sagging soffits may be a sign that an animal is sleeping in that area, especially in the summer months.
  • FASCIA – The fascia is the board or metal flashing found at the edge of the roof where the shingles end. We will look for any signs of gnawing or rot. Any areas that have water damage are softer and provide an easier area for squirrels and rodents to gnaw through.
  • OVERHEAD ELECTRICAL LIGHTS – Overhead electrical lines are electrical supply lines to a structure from the pole. They allow squirrels and rodents the ability to travel across and gain entry to the roof where they can make entry points through the sewer stacks, hood vents, weather vents and gable vents.

  • SEWER STACKS – Sewer stacks are plumbing vents that are required in a plumbing drain system to maintain atmospheric pressure in the pipes. Without proper venting, flowing water creates negative pressure that can slow water flow and empty P-traps. Vent stacks are wrapped in a lead boot which squirrels and rodents love to gnaw on eventually creating an opening into the structure.
  • 10” CURVED “GOOSE NECK” HOOD VENTS – 10” Curved vents are used for attic ventilation or to cover an exhaust pipe extending through a roof. It comes equipped with a screen but animals can pull or push this easily to the side and gain entry into the attic. We will look for any signs of openings along the edges and for any screen damage.
  • 4” CURVED “GOOSE NECK” HOOD VENTS – 4” Curved vents are used for attic ventilation or to vent a dryer through the roof. It comes equipped with a screen but animals can easily push or pull it to the side and gain entry into the attic. We will check that the vent is intact and that no damaged has been cause around it.
  • 4’ WEATHER VENTS – Weather vents vent heat out of an attic. They’re usually found midway down the roof and are 4’ in length. They come equipped with a screen that animals can easily push away to gain entry into the attic. We will check the vent for any damage along it’s edges as well as to the screen.
  • RIDGE VENTS – Ridge vents are vents that run the roof ridge. We will look for the presence or absence of the plastic end caps and any signs of forced entry. Ridge vents do wear down over time. Heron is able to replace any worn caps if necessary.
  • TURBINE / SOLAR POWERED ATTIC VENTS – Turbine / solar powered attic vents are powered vents with a supplied 110v or solar power. Any major damage to these vents should be completed by a licensed roofing contractor.
  • GABLE VENTS – Gable vents are common entry points for wildlife. We will inspect each gable vent to check for damage or tampering.
